Mezzanine floor apartment located on a catalagued building
The apartment is located in one of the first streets built after the demolition of the medieval wall of Barcelona. This is the Ezequiel Porcel’s House, built on 1883 and it presents all the constructive characteristics of the time: solid brick walls and substructure of unidirectional metal beams with a “Volta Catalana” for the formation of the forged. The building follows the dictates of the municipal ordinance of the late nineteenth century: A mezzanine that sets it apart from other plants the absence of balconies, with the maintenance of the dimensions of the openings of the ground floor and the extension of its lining. Assorted elements, balconies with stone slab and cast iron balustrade, are insinuated in the mezzanine floor, wider on the second floor where the balcony is long, and are reduced in the upper floors. The uniform treatment of the surface of the wall, with plaster on the ground floor, imitates the stone and on the upper floors frames the openings and reinforces the horizontal lines of the ceilings.
Despite the fact that this wonderful apartment is not located within the orthogonal grid of the Eixample, the plot is rectangular and allows to develop the classic typology of long and narrow typical Eixample’s apartments, with main facade to the street and a facade inside the block, in addition to interior patios with ventilation where facilities run. Moreover, in the case of the mezzanine floor, it has an interior terrace perfectly oriented to south-west, which guarantees the sun for most of the day as well as the calm and tranquillity of a space away from the traffic. Given the characteristics of the property, it is proposed to focus the day zone towards the interior of the block. The absence of structural walls in the first two cradles allows to easily locating a large living area, dining and kitchen with a direct exit to the terrace. The rooms are located at the opposite, at the main facade and the inner courtyards, one of them accessible also from the house itself. As it is a street mainly for pedestrian use, in terms of noise it is no problem to locate here the rest area. The existence of multiple patio takes the advantage to locate the service area as bathrooms and laundry space.
is the biggest district in Barcelona, home to many restaurants, cafes, boutique shops and entertainment venues.
