The Neighborhood of Eixample
Eixample, which can be literally translated from Catalan as “extension” for being the newest part of the city, is a large area north of Plaça Catalunya to the left and Passeig de Gràcia to the right. In fact, this place is an extension of the city that benefited greatly thanks to the ingenious urban planning that was in the hands of the Catalan engineer Cerdá during the 1850s. Cerdá had weakness for straight lines, which is why the whole area is arranged on a grid and each buildings block has an internal patio. This means that it is very difficult to get lost in the Eixample and, as a result, very easy to find places.
Today, the Eixample is famous for being home to most of Barcelona’s art nouveau masterpieces and because it is a high class residential area with many shops and some of the best city´s restaurants. It´s a great place to live in, always full of life and things to do.
