The area of Eixample
Eixample is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in Barcelona. The word Eixample means extension or expansion and it was originally designed by the Catalan engineer Ildefons Cerdà in the 1850s as an extension to the old city. Eixample has a great combination of tranquility and activity. Here you find parks and open spaces, but also a broad vairity of bars, clubs, cafés and outside terraces. This area has a wide range of restaurants and here you can find many of Barcelona’s best places to eat. Besides, it’s home to Barcelona’s stylish and luxurious shops such as Gucci and Tiffany’s, located on Passeig de Gracia, and some of the more luxury hotels in Barcelona such as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Furthermore, this is a good place to spend days discovering all the beautiful buildings, restaurants and parks. Eixample has three of Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic works where millions of people go to see them every year. Public transport in this area is very well thought as nearly all the metro lines cross through part of the neighborhood at some point.
